Legalized sports betting kicks off in Rhode Island

November 26, 2018 - 9:25 am

Legalized sports gambling has officially arrived in New England.

As of Monday Twin River Casino started accepting sports bets at its Lincoln location, with the opportunity extending to Twin River in Tiverton starting in December. The Opening Bet ceremony was slated to be held at 3 p.m., with state politicians and chairman of Twin River Worldwide Holdings John Taylor participating.

Rhode Island becomes the first state in New England to take advantage of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to allow for legalized sports betting on a state by state basis.

Fifty-one percent of the revenue from sports betting will go to Rhode Island, with the vendor getting 32 percent and casino awarded 17 percent.
