New Tom Brady book co-author on Not Sunday podcast: Deflategate played role in Jimmy Garoppolo trade

July 31, 2018 - 10:52 pm

Casey Sherman, co-author of "12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption," joined Ryan Hannable on the Not Sunday podcast to explain how the Deflategate book came about, and also to discuss some key parts of the book.

One of the excerpts released detailed how Brady was upset with Robert Kraft when Kraft announced the Patriots wouldn’t pursue legal action against the NFL for its handling of Deflategate. Brady didn't know Kraft would be making that announcement at the owners meetings and found out watching on TV.

“What the [expletive]?” Brady said over the phone to NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith. “Why am I not getting the support I deserve on this thing?”

Brady was very upset with Kraft and Sherman explained how Kraft has needed to rebuild his relationship with the quarterback in recent years, which he connected to the trade of Jimmy Garoppolo.

It was reported Kraft made it clear Brady could not be traded and therefore Garoppolo needed to get dealt as he wasn't going to be on the roster after the 2017 season.

“He was pissed off, obviously," Sherman said of Brady when hearing Kraft would be giving up the fight. "Kraft has supported him. He couldn’t support him there, but the Kraft family has gone above and beyond over the past couple of years to rebuild that relationship. I think that was part of the reason why Jimmy Garoppolo was jettisoned last year. That was something Kraft felt like he had to do to continue to build that relationship with Brady."

Sherman added: “It’s been a relationship that Bob Kraft has worked on since he had to make that very difficult decision. I think Kraft needed to make that for the future of the team. As much as he loves Tom Brady, and he does — Dave Wedge and I spent time with Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft and you see the love the owners have for Tom Brady. You also see the anger they still have against Goodell. Even though they have had to make their peace with the commissioner, they are still really pissed off at Goodell and the Deflategate situation.”

The book will also be turned into movie, which is already in the works. Click here to buy the book on Amazon.
