The Skate Podcast: Could the Bruins miss the playoffs in 2020?

July 09, 2019 - 4:46 pm

The Skate Podcast co-host Ken Laird isn’t pleased with what’s gone on with the Bruins since their Game 7 loss to the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Final.

Listen to your team news NOW.

General manager Don Sweeney has not re-signed key restricted free agents Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo and Danton Heinen, and over the weekend the Bruins lost unrestricted free agent Marcus Johansson to the Buffalo Sabres.

In the latest edition of The Skate Podcast, Laird and co-host Matt Kalman discussed Johansson’s departure and whether the Bruins have enough talent to replace him. Sunday Skate co-host and CBS Sports hockey expert Pete Blackburn phoned in to give his take on the Bruins’ offseason and other moves from around the NHL.

During the conversation with Blackburn, Laird dropped this bombshell

“I think the Bruins might miss the playoffs. I think there’s a chance they could miss the playoffs. The Cup hangover worry and just …”

Before Laird could go on, Blackburn interrupted the crazy take.

“If there’s a Cup hangover to happen I would put more money on the Blues not making the playoffs next year than the Bruins not making it to the playoffs,” Blackburn said.

Laird’s point was not only will there be a Cup hangover, but teams like the Sabres and Florida Panthers will be improved. Nonetheless, the Bruins have far too much talent to miss the postseason, especially with the way the playoff format works.

I can’t see the Bruins missing the playoffs because at the very least they’ll be a wild card,” Kalman said. “That [Metropolitan Division’s> not that great.”

Also on the podcast, Sunday Skate’s No. 1 caller Maria of Watertown made her pod debut to air some frustrations but also realistic takes about Sweeney’s current predicament.

It’s all in the July 9, 2019 edition of The Skate Podcast:
