Who's swinging the lumber? J.D. Martinez helps Red Sox avoid sweep

May 11, 2018 - 12:10 pm

Thursday night had the makings of a disaster for the Red Sox. The struggling bullpen blew a 4-0 lead, putting the Red Sox in danger of getting swept by the Yankees. But thankfully for the Red Sox, they have J.D. Martinez swinging the lumber.

Martinez led off the top of the eighth with a solo home run into the short porch in right, just out of the reach of Aaron Judge, to give the Red Sox the lead again. They would hold onto that and end the Yankees' eight-game win streak.

The home run continued yet another hot week for Martinez, as it was his third home run in the last six games. He also has five RBIs, five runs scored and a .360 average over the last seven days. Martinez is now hitting .348 with nine homers, 29 RBIs and a 1.018 OPS in an impressive first season with the Sox.
