Wild Third - USC Still On Top

December 26, 2009 - 5:42 pm

The first play from scrimmage of the second half was a pass from USC quarterback Matt Barkley that was intercepted by BC senior strong safety Marcellus Bowman and bought back to the Trojans' 9-yard line. Two plays later Montel Harris fumbled the ball on the 6-yard line and it was picked up by Jurrell Casey and returned to the 32-yard line. The Trojans turned that into a 38-yard field goal but that was all the scoring for the quarter. The Eagles offense has not been able to get out of its own way in the quarter though the special teams almost were able to give them momentum. On a Ryan Quigley punt, the ball was touched by USC special teams player D.J. Shoemate as he was engaged in a block. Shoemate kicked the ball through Dominick LeGrande's legs. The ever-aware Luke Kuechly fell on the ball and it seemed that BC had caught a break at the USC 30-yard line. The play went to review where it looked like it would be the Eagles ball but the officials deemed that Shoemate was "blocked into the ball" thus negating the fumble. Late in the quarter Harris was pass blocking for Dave Shinskie and was hit hard by a USC defender and was injured. The word right now is that it is a deep contusion to the upper buttocks and he is still in the game.
